Candidates smell rat in AE exams; demand CBI probe | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Sept 19: If first impression is the last impression then the new team of members of the Public Service Commission (PSC) have lost their credibility at the recently held exams for the post of Assistant Engineers because the aspirants have not only alleged large scale bungling but even demand a CBI probe. When the coalition government's spokesman Naeem Akhtar introduced the first list of cabinet's choice of candidates for appointment as chairman and members of the PSC, before the media on March 15, he described the chairman as man of "impeccable honesty and integrity." Giving description of other nominees, he went on to claim, "Our recommendations are slightly more mixed and non-traditional and non-conventional." It is a matter of record that the antecedents of most of the nominees proved to be controversial and were subsequently substituted by others. Subsequently the second list was framed allegedly in a hush-hush manner with the then Chief Secretary Iqbal Khanday making abject surrender before the government and obliging it by affixing the stamp of "all is well with the nominees." With the new team in place, aam aadmi felt that government must have applied its mind properly, adopted the prescribed method for filling up the vacancies in the premier selection body for gazetted posts. Unfortunately the hopes have been dashed to the ground with glaring case of the alleged bungling of the written test for 152 posts of Assistant Engineers in R&B, Hydraulic Wing of PWD, Rural Development coming to surface. According to hundreds of aggrieved candidates, who were among 3000 plus candidates for the 152 vacancies, the question bank from which the paper setter had set the paper, was allegedly known to some. "A few screen shots are revealing as to how the alleged leak took place on WhatsApp and was used for circulation/exchange of information about the book-a question bank on Civil Engineering-Through Objective Type of Questions'; by Prof SP Gupta & SS Gupta, published by CBS Publishers & Distributors Pvt Ltd," said a delegation of aggrieved aspirants sharing the alleged details of the WatsApp conversation. To the shock and surprise of the aggrieved candidates "the entire set of questions is from the same book without even a change in the punctuation of the sentences used in framing questions." The aggrieved candidates talking to Early Times described it as "great leak" and the "first sixer of new team of PSC". "For around a year no exams were held as the government was coming up with new team of PSC members. But the same has proved a flop show," the aspirants said. Others described it a "bouncer" from PSC which had been defunct for the past around a year when then Chief Minister Omar Abdullah failed in its timely revamp. "One thing that is something reassuring is that there is not much tilt of balance in favour of candidates from either of the two regions of the state. It appears that the ruling coalition and its nominees on the commission have taken care that even in this distribution of spoils," quipped Riyaz Ahmad (name changed), a candidate. The aggrieved urged the Governor NN Vohra and Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed to intervene and direct the commission to cancel the test and order a thorough inquest by CBI. While the PSC members could not be contacted for comments, other officials in the commission allegedly that reports had been received of large scale bunglings in the recently held exam. |
