Cow killing movement in Kashmir is most illogical, unjustifiable, unreasonable | Shah dares VHP to enforce economic blockade | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Sept 19: The Kashmiri leaders, who have joined hands to accelerate the cow killing movement in the Valley, are playing with fire. They are not realizing the fact that those behind this so-called movement are the trouble creaters who want to disturb peace in the state at all costs. Thus whatever they are doing is most illogical, unjustifiable and unreasonable. If on the one hand, all the Kashmiri Muslim leaders have declared that they would ensure the collapse of the 1932 law that bans the cow slaughter and beef eating in the state to respect the religious sentiments of the Hindus, who venerate cow, on the other hand, a number of socio-religious and political groups in Jammu region have denounced the state government for its dual approach towards the sensitive issue, condemned those in the Valley who have demanded repeal of the 1932 law and threatened to launch a mass agitation in Jammu region. So much so, a couple of Jammu organizations have threatened to launch an agitation. During the Amarnath land row, there was also a slogan "Bathindi Khali Karo". Such was the nature and magnitude of the Amarnath land agitation that no Kashmiri leader could had dared to come to Jammu. They were so mortally afraid of the agitated people of Jammu region. The memory of what the people of Jammu region did to Kashmiri leaders like Farooq Abdullah at the Jammu Airport is still fresh to be forgotten. Similar, the memory of how they reached Raj Bhawan is also fresh in the minds of the people of Jammu region as well as in the minds of those who witnessed the Jammu wrath between June 28 and August 31, 2008. There are potent reasons to believe that Jammu could replicate 2008. It would be in the interest of Kashmiri leadership if it eschewed the path it has decided to follow. They should remember that the Hindus hold cow in highest esteem. By insisting on cow-killing and beef eating, they would further alienate the already alienated Hindu community from Kashmir. Further alienation of Jammu from Kashmir would harm only the latter. However, it appears that the Kashmiri leadership will not change its attitude. This became clear on Saturday, when Syed Ali shah Geelani's man Shabir Ahmad Shah dared the VHP to enforce economic blockade. VHP leader Leela Krishan Sharma had yesterday threatened economic blockade in case the Jammu & Kashmir Speaker agrees to allow discussion on anti-beef ban bill in the upcoming Assembly session, starting from October 3. One thing is very clear: The state is in for a bigger trouble - trouble that could affect the relations between the coalition partners, PDP and BJP. The PDP cannot afford to annoy its Kashmir constituency by taking line different from the one being advocated by all the Kashmiris. Similarly, if the private member's bill seeking decriminalization of cow killing and beef eating is adopted by the assembly, the BJP would further lose its face. It is, however, a different thing that the people of Jammu hold the view that the "BJP would go with the PDP like in the past". Besides, they do not give any credence to the VHP's threat, saying "the Sangh Parivar has discredited itself in Jammu region by defending the ruling coalition and its agenda of alliance". |
