BJP says decision not taken by it, opposition terms ban as reduntant | Internet ban holds Government in bad taste | | EARLY TIMES SPECIAL
Jammu, Sept 27:The coalition government, especially BJP, has come under the opposition attack for imposing a ban on the internet services, which was lifted late this evening. The opposition called it as a hoax exercise of the government to hide its failure to deal with the situation in wake of the beef ban row and said it was aimed at saving the respective constituencies of the coalition partners. The ruling party leaders, however, termed the ban as necessary to save the situation from worsening further in the state. The opposition leaders said it was a futile exercise as after the lifting of the ban, the social networking sites were most likely going to be flooded with the objectionable material. "This is not the BJP decision to impose ban on internet services on the eve of eid. It is the government decision, backed by security forces of the state, in the interest of the people of the state," said BJP spokesperson Arun Gupta while talking to Early Times. He said BJP, as party, had nothing to do with the ban on the internet services. NC leader Nasir Aslam Wani said, "At a time when the world is solely dependent on internet, snapping off the services is not a wise step." When asked as to how he can justify the ban on short messaging services (sms) imposed by NC-Cong rule during 2010 unrest, he said that world had moved on since the 2010 unrest and was more dependable on the technology services that were the need of the hour . He said by imposing such ban, government has apparently shown that it is still in the ancient ages despite its tall claims for being the hi-tech government which it is not. |
