This Eid Kashmir finds traitor in Geelani | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Sept 27: Finally Kashmir seems to have found a traitor in separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani, who first asked them to fight beef ban calling for instant hartal but within a fortnight ended up making "government-friendly" announcement only to show that "my word is final in Kashmir." Even as on September 23, Geelani asked the people not to "hurt sentiments of any community" while going for sacrifice of animals on Eid-Ul -Azha, his statement was more of apparent wickedness to show his personal power than any effort for communal harmony. With Eid having passed off peacefully, except for some stray incidents of violence on day one, Geelani is trying to claim that it was his personal achievement than anything else. Geelani has started to convey through his supporters that it was only because of his last minute intervention that Eid passed off peacefully. Infact this way Geelani is trying to hit two birds with one stone. On one hand he wants to expose his rival Mirwaiz Umar Farooq as the "weak man who tried to incite communal violence by having asked people to defy the beef ban", while on the other hand the old man is improving his relations with the PDP-BJP alliance, which seemingly made him stronger in the last six months of their governance. With other senior separatist leaders like Shabir Shah, Nayeem Khan and Agha Hassan Budgami having sworn allegiance with Geelani in the recent past, it has been only since PDP-BJP came to power that Geelani faction of Hurriyat has emerged stronger and the Mirwaiz faction is going weaker. "Geelani acted differently only to show his personal might and to disescredit Mirwaiz Umar," said a political observer adding "the reality is that people are fed up of violence fuelled by separatists." "By and large the people didn't resort to any violence because they are fed up of violence which only led to bloodshed while the political leaders remained a beneficiary of this all," he added. The same observation was visible in the minds of common man down the Kashmir streets. "Why did Geelani change his stand on beef ban within fortnight? This was only because he knows the mindset of the people of Kashmir and exploited the same to show his personal might," said a Hyderpora man, adding that the fact remains "Geelani is a traitor who works for his personal benefits or that of his family." Geelani is understood to be enjoying good relations with some PDP leaders, more so through his son Nayeem Geelani. Though Geelani often speaks against mainstream parties including NC and Congress, the hardliner is seen to have an equation with the PDP. In July this year, former RAW Chief A S Dulat in his memoir made a startling revelation that PDP was the brainchild of Geelani and that he helped the party to win 2002 state Assembly elections. It is the PDP led coalition which in April this year allowed Geelani to organize a mega anti-India rally in Hyderpora near the Police headquarter while Pakistani flags were also waved on the occasion. Thereafter Geelani was granted passport. |
