JU authority clipping wings of DDE | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Sept 27: Jammu University is all set to decimate the institution of Distance Education by clipping its wings with the present dispensation hell-bent to spurn the moves of Distance Education Department designed to further strengthen its functioning in the larger interest of student fraternity. The sources informed Early Times that admission of students in B.A/B.Com for the session 2015-16 is over with grant of another extension of date for admission beginning from 28th Sept adding that about 1500 students have sought admission at undergraduate level till date. The number of students will swell further when the admission report from various Learner Support Centres located in different parts of Jammu Division pours in the DDE. Because of paucity of regular teaching staff, every year permanent faculty of DDE is beefed up by engaging contractual teachers to teach the undergraduate students. As per past practice, this year also an advertisement was issued by the University and eligible candidates submitted their applications for engagement as teacher on contractual basis, but interviews for the same were not held, informed the aggrieved candidates on the condition of anonymity to Early Times. The sources further informed that the Jammu University as a part of its surprising but clever move, a decision was got done in a meeting of Campus Deans with respect to engage contractual faculty to teach undergraduate students and as per the document which is in the possession of Early Times, the decision so taken reads "It was resolved that one lecturer be engaged for enrollment of 500 students to P.G. courses in the Directorate of Distance Education. However, no recruitment is required for U.G. courses. DDE shall manage it from the existing resources". The perusal of the documents divulges that the meeting of Campus Dean was held without feeling the necessity of inviting the Director, DDE who was the primary requisitioning officer for engagement of contractual faculty to support the permanent faculty, as usual, thus scuttling the students-friendly move aimed at facilitating the students to attain quality education in the Distance Education Department which smacks of tacit intentions of the University inimical to the academic interests of the students. The sources further revealed that the job of the faculty working in DDE is not akin to other Departments of the University as it involves pre-hand huge exercise of writing lessons, editing, proof reading etc. paving way for further print of study material for the enrolled students. The indecisiveness on the part of University Authority to hold in time interviews for engagement of contractual faculty has created an ambiguous situation in Distance Education Department with academic career of the recently enrolled students in DDE landing into jeopardy for their no fault. The sources informed Early Times that a tug of war was unleashed by the University Authority pestering the Distance Education Department to give justification over justification with calculated move to inordinately delay the process of engaging contractual faculty thereby promoting the policy of invective attitude coupled with strong likes and dislikes. |
