Not good for Speaker to "watch" fashion shows, say Jammuites

Early Times Report

JAMMU, Sept 27: Even as the state is faced with a tense situation over beef ban row, Assembly Speaker Kavinder Gupta on Saturday found some time to attend a Modelling Contest and relax himself. He and BJP activist Yudhvir Sethi were found enjoying the moments while watching the fashion show.
Notwithstanding his intentions, which most probably could have been to become part of the efforts of a private company to promote the budding models of Jammu, people feel that since the Chair of the Speaker commands a great respect and the person holding it is termed as a role model of the House and the society, Kavinder should have kept a distance from the show of which he was the chief guest.
The Speaker and Sethi clapped as 25 male and female models set the ramp on fire at the police auditorium. While Sethi, who is neither an MLA nor holds any other important post, is free to move anywhere as he doesn't have anything at stake, this is not the case with Kavinder. Honour demands that he, as Speaker, should avoid attending such functions, feel Jammuites.
He relaxed himself despite the pressure, which must be building on him, following the submission of a bill to the Assembly Secretariat by NC against the law that bans the slaughter of cows and the sale of beef in J&K.
He faces the real test on October 3, the first day of the brief Assembly session in Srinagar.
He and his government must have done all the homework to logically reject the bill but NC is likely to create uproarious scenes in the House as part of its strategy to regain in Kashmir the political ground which it otherwise has lost to PDP.
Its strategy may or may not work in the valley but in Jammu region, it lost the political ground after it submitted the bill to the Assembly Secretariat, hurting the sentiments of the people.
People told Early Times that the Speaker had earlier also been the chief guest of such a fashion show held a few months back in Jammu.
