Srinagar, Sept 27: Nepotism and corruption is rampant in valley's largest tertiary care SMHS hospital, as patients with chronic ailments, though without any favor, are thrown into the long waiting lists while influential are treated first hand.
SMHS, the government-owned General Hospital supposed to be committed to provide patient care to the needy, has, however, seemingly failed to do so as patients allege 'deliberate delays' on part of the medicos when it comes treating a commoner, while those exerting influence are given precedence.
'Early Times' from its sources came to know that the patients with serious ailments like "chronic cholecystitis" which causes swelling and irritation of the gallbladder that persists over time are inconsiderately overlooked if failed to please medicos.
Chronic cholecystitis according to sources is usually caused by repeated attacks of acute (sudden) cholecystitis. Most of these attacks are caused by gallstones in the gallbladder. These attacks cause the walls of the gallbladder to thicken. The gallbladder begins to shrink. Eventually, the gallbladder is less able to concentrate, store, and release bile. Sources said such patients have fewer chances to survive if not operated on time, however in SMHS these patients are being asked to wait for six to seven year for surgery resulting in their ultimately death. Medical Superintendent SMHSS Dr Nazir Chowdhry evaded queries from Early Times."During past two years two patients with "cholecystitis" died after medicos told them to wait for one year for surgery. One Ghulam Hassan Sofi of Ganderbal district died in the year 2010 due to unnecessary delay in surgery while another who had crossed the maximum limit of surgery died last year" sources informed.
They said the unnecessary delay in surgery can cause serious problems like cancer and other co-related diseases in gall bladder resulting in the death of the patient.
"The callous attitude adopted by the doctors has obsessed patients who even comes from far flung areas with the great belief that they will get treated properly but when it comes to their treatment they are being asked by the doctors to go for unwanted tests from nearby private labs to get their commission" they said. Sources further said that commission agents are ruling the roost in referral hospital as the machinery used to conduct vital tests like MRI, CT Scan and USG have been made non-functional so that the patients are forced to conduct tests form private labs.
