Illegal constructions over shadow clean governance claims | 2 dozen structures coming up near LA Complex | | Early Times Report srinagar, Oct 5: Even as the legislators boast of clean governance in the Legislature, around a dozen illegal structures are coming up in the close vicinity of the Legislative complex. The Srinagar Municipal Corporation and the Srinagar Development Authority has been allegedly encouraging illegal constructions. Sources said from near Budshah Bridge to Magarmal Bagh to Batamaloo-Mominabad road located in the neighbourhood of the Legislative complex, illegal structures are coming up. Official sources said the top BJP Minister was recently informed about the illegal constructions and asked to take action against the Enforcement Officers for allowing the unlawful works. "But he did not take any action because of the political intervention of some PDP ministers," said a senior official pleading anonymity. "The construction of around one dozen illegal shopping complexes at General Bus Stand and on the Mominabad Road was something which The Minister could have personally checked as the sites are close to the Legislature Complex, but he never went for the inspection," said an NGO which claimed to have filed complaint with the SMC Commissioner and others concerned. "We wanted the Minister to get firsthand account of the large scale bunglings allowed by the SMC and SDA officials but he is silent," the NGO said. People have been complaining that SMC and SDA officials take huge bribe worth millions to allow construction of illegal shopping complexes. "If the government only inspects the ongoing construction of illegal complexes on the Hyderpora bye pass, it will come to fore that millions have been grabbed by the enforcement squads in the deals," the people said. But while the people complain that corruption rules the roost, the SMC officials have often accused some PDP ministers who also happen to be MLAs from Srinagar, for having unduly allowed the illegal constructions to come up unabated. "Go and see what is happening in Jawahar Nagar where multistoried malls have come up," said a SMC officer adding "We are helpless". During the ongoing legislature session if some MLA raises question on the status of illegal constructions, the Government will be in a tight spot. "We won't be able to defend the misgivings," said an official in the Housing Department. |
