Prof R N Kaul falls to a bite of puny mosquito | | | M. L.Kak
Early Times Report
Jammu,Oct 28: A great teacher with a majestic voice as Prof. R.N.Kaul,used to be called is no more. He was with his grandson in Bangalore where he succumbed to the Dengue attack. What a pity? A great man falling to the bite of a puny mosquite. I have been his student for about four years an my experience has been that he was really a very good teacher. He and his family members had shifted to Bangalore a few months ago and had plans to return to Jammu after about three to four months. But God intervened and forced him to cancel the programme. The moment he felt feverish he was admitted to hospital where he breathed his last as the bite of the mosquito had not allowed him to face the severity of the bite. He was 93 at the time of death. Prof. Kaul was opposed to his colleagues and other college teachers, who, in service,or after retirement, would spend time in private coaching.Once when I praised another teacher for his learning and for his teaching capacity Prof. Kaul would silence me by telling me "he is wasting time on minting money when he could utilized his talent on writing books." Prof. Kaul has edited a number of text books and authored a number of books on literature and Kashmir poets. He was adept in translating Kashmir poems into English. In fact he had become an expert in interpreting the spiritual significance of Lal Ded's couplets. The great professor had also translated into English several verses of Kashmiri poet,Bimla Raina. This way Prof. Kaul was a creative teacher always engaged in writing critical analysis of writings of various writers and poets. Despite the fact that he had retired as a college principal he was a down-to earth teacher. He had a typical squint in his eye which facilitated him in keeping a watch on those students who had no taste for hard work. It used to be a pindrop silence the moment he would enter into the class room.Nobody dared to disturb him the moment he started delivering his lecture. It was so because of his majestic voice and equally a majestic personality. What added to his majestic voice and personality was his complete knowledge of the subject he would teach. Whether it was teaching of English Literature, essays, poetry or even grammar he was an expert and hence there was no question of any student getting bored in the class. Well I remember he was incharge of the English section of the magazine of one of the oldest colleges in Srinagar, S.P.College, he was a strict teacher but was prepared to be liberal with those students who were,in his view, bright and intelligent. A simple man with high values.A simple man with high principles but at the same time he was a teacher par excellence. A teacher who would be missed by hundreds of students. He has been teacher of senior bureaucrats, political leaders, journalists, doctors, engineers. May his soul rest in peace and grant co urage to his son and daughter to bear the loss. |
