Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Oct 28: Online ‘operations’ have finally proved costly for the militant group of Hizbul Mujahideen led by Burhan Muzaffar Wani in south Kashmir as four of his close aides got killed in surgical strikes within a week. Security officials have ascribed the reason for success to tips gathered from the group’s online activities.
Two of the “techie militants”, who were handling the online operations of the outfit, and would even recruit youth through “online indoctrination”, have been killed within four days. Given the high quality intelligence input, sources said, the strikes were almost surgical in nature as the security forces were quite sure of the militant hideouts.
As per police, Afaq Ahmed alias Afaaqullah of Pulwama, who was killed on Oct 26, was an M-Tech by qualification and would handle online operations of the militants, was the technological brain behind the outfit. “The other techie in the Hizb ranks was killed in an encounter in Shopian, last week,” police said. In fact, sources said, the group photo of militants led by Burhan, all wearing Army fatigues in some south Kashmir village, and subsequent clippings, provided a major lead for the security forces to track down the militants.
The way Burhan group had started to glorify its ranks online had pushed the state police to embarrassment while the police were subsequently pulled up by the Union Home Ministry.
Sources said it was only after the personal visit of National Security Advisor Ajit Doval to Kashmir that police was forced to change its strategy of tackling the militancy.
For the past around a week, the police have been able to take a lead again. Four of the most wanted militants have been gunned down, two each in Pulwama and Shopian districts of south Kashmir. Those killed in the apple town of Shopian on October 22 were identified as Adil Khanday of Barbug and Irshad Sheikh of Maldera. The other two commanders killed in Pulwama have been identified as Afaqullah Bhat and Abdul Manan Dar.
Burhan Wani, a 21-year-old boy from Tral in Pulwama district, has become the new face of local militants in the Valley. His videos and audios uploaded on social networking sites have gone viral and motivated many youngsters to join militant ranks.
Army and police officials have said around 60 local youth were active in militancy related activities —the highest in recent years. They said it was for the first time in the past around a decade that local militants have outnumbered the foreigners.
But police is buoyed at the recent success of having neutralized the militants. “Killing of four wanted militants within four days is a big success, and we will uphold this,” said a police official. “They(militants) were trying to behave over-smart but have finally trapped them,” the official said.
