Early Times Report

JAMMU, Oct 28: The lush green valleys of famous hill resorts of Patnitop and Nathatop are alarmingly getting barren with each passing day as the trees, the real treasure of these places are being cut down in a meticulously planned method. The indiscriminate cutting of green gold right from Patnitop to Sanasar is more than visible to anybody but concerned authorities have turned a blind eye to unlawful activities. The methodology adopted to cut down trees in the 20 kilometers long stretch between Patnitop and Sanasar is being executed in such a manner that a lay man cannot ever imagine that the land blessed with nature’s abundant gift of greenery is getting deprecated day by day. The tactic being applied to extract the timber from the forest wealth of Panitop and adjoining areas is quite easy as the perpetrators of such crime simply make a hole in the trunks of lush green Deodar as well as Kail trees and then lit fire in them which gets sparked inside the tree for days together. In order to hide the procedure of making the trees dry by way of igniting fire, the timber smugglers douse the flames and reignite them which goes on and on and on until and unless the particular tree gets completely dried. The technique of engulfing the trees with fire is utilized so that they become deadwood and can be cut without any hindrance since as and when the trees get dry they would come out of the preview of the laid down norm which prohibits cutting down green trees.
Though the Forest Department admits that the nomads do apply such method of lighting up the trees but it is not ready to accept that their action is being instigated by the timber merchants to extract benefits from green gold.
