On last day of 'Darbar' in Srinagar, Ministers stay away from Secretariat | | | Peerzada Ummer Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Oct 28: Several Ministers stayed away on Wednesday from the Civil Secretariat on the last day of 'Darbar Move' in Srinagar, adding to the woes of people. Long queues were witnessed outside the Secretariat gate. Security men had to thrash many people who tried to queue-jump. Several people who had come from far off places burst into tears after their effort of leaving home at dawn and reaching Srinagar yielded no results. Ghulam Nabi Dar, 73, said he had left his home at Kupwara at 8 am amid cold. He boarded a bus for Srinagar at 9 am and reached here at 11 am. "After waiting in a long queue for more than two hours, I was allowed to go inside the Secretariat. From the corridor of the ground floor, I started asking for the room of the Minister concerned only to be told that the Minister hasn't come and the room is locked," he told Early Times. Like Dar, there were scores of people who had to leave disappointed. "The Ministers who have no feeling for people's woes should be taken to task. They live like autocratic rulers and princes without bothering for the people who braved odds and voted for them," said Altaf Ahmad, a resident of Ganderbal. Altaf was equally angry at the security men at the Secretariat gate for seizing the mutton which he had brought from Srinagar for his family. "They say no bags allowed. What for is the security then? Can't they check what we have inside the bags?" he asked. Mohammad Shafi Pandit, a school teacher said he had applied for a one-day leave so that he could visit the Secretariat and meet the MoS for Power Mohammad Ashraf Mir. "We have been facing electricity crisis for past several days. I came here with an application so that the Minister could look into it. But he hasn't come. God knows where he is," Pandit said. Many people who talked to Early Times outside the Secretariat opined that there should be a proper attendance system for Ministers so that they no longer considered Government functioning as a luxury but a duty. Meanwhile, reports said that many days ahead of the 'Darbar Move', the Ministers had ordered their bags be packed and their offices at Srinagar's Secretariat be closed. |
