Scores of Doda villages yet to get safe drinking water | | | Bijay Charak
Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 24: Despite ample funding by union government for providing safe drinking water to rural areas, many villages in Doda district still struggle to get it. The uncovered habitations are hugely impacted by the unavailability of safe drinking water. Take for example the village Shiva of Block Ghat of district Doda where hundreds of households in two panchyats are still without safe drinking water. Anil Sharma, a local resident said that previous year state government had a target to provide safe drinking water to 804 habitations but unfortunately it could cover only 379 habitations under National Rural Drinking Water Programme. Criticizing the previous government Sharma said that Central Government is aimed at providing safe drinking water to the people in rural areas - one of the basic requirements for leading a healthy life. But in J & K the government despite having enough funds chose to return the unutilized money than achieving the target. "It requires three hours to fetch water from the nearby chashma (spring). We have to make several rounds walking four to eight kilometres with heavy buckets of water on our heads. It not only is time consuming but affects our lives in a major way," he said. |
