Omar's taunt becomes food for thought for PDP | | | Early Times Report srinagar, Nov 24: With Prime Minister Narendra Modi providing Rs 80,000 crore development package to the State, why doesn't PDP break alliance with the right wing BJP and join hands with Congress? Former Chief Minister and National Conference working President Omar Abdullah is curious to know if this signal of his has any takers in the rival PDP. Interestingly this hint is being seen a blessing in disguise for the PDP. Omar has created ripples in the political circles for the hint he posted on micro blogging website Twitter with regard to PDP's prospects of alliance with Congress, as he feels Modi's role is over after having given the development package on November 7 here. The former Chief Minister endorsed that there were rumors that some PDP and Congress leaders have started lobbying for the formation of the new alliance, which can keep BJP at bay. Omar was prompted for a reaction to this rumor by his party colleague and spokesman Junaid Azim Mattu who twitted: "Strong rumours about PDP's imminent realignment with the Congress and some independent legislators. Would you be surprised?" Omar Abdullah instantly retweeted Junaid's post saying "After the Modi/Mufti accord where Mufti Sahib & his party are concerned nothing would surprise me Junaid." The twin tweets went viral in the political circles with some PDP leaders instantly calling on Congress leaders to discuss the pros and cons of the signal. A PDP leader took it as a wonderful idea pleading that "this hint is a blessing in disguise." "It is opportunity worth cashing for our party, which has been losing public support since the day we joined hands with the saffron brigade… Now that we have got development package, we must give a second thought to alliance with the BJP," said a PDP leader. He said many of the party leaders want to thank Omar Abdullah for having given such a wonderful idea. "He (Omar) might have tried to taunt us but the fact remains that he has given us a food for thought through his childish approach of tweeting," the PDP leader said, adding, "Miracles do happen." A Congress leader confirmed to Early Times that they have "started getting feelers" from PDP. "But it all has started to happen only in response to (Omar Abdullah's) tweets," the Congress leader said. He, however, said Omar must bear it in mind that Congress is not a selfish party which will come to power for the sake of it. "He (Omar) must know the history that in 1974 Congress sacrificed its Ganderbal seat for his grandfather and NC leader Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah," the Congress leader said. Expressing displeasure over the way Omar was trying to discredit role of Congress in the State politics, the national party leader didn't rule out possibility of back-channel negotiations with the PDP. "If he (Omar Abdullah) himself thinks so, what's the harm in back-channel deliberations which happen to be a part and parcel of the politics," the Congress leader said. Observers opine that the tweet has given the PDP and Congress an "open opportunity to discuss and decide their fate." "Both the Jammu and Kashmir regions are unsatisfied with the performance of the present regime. Jammu says BJP failed while PDP is losing support in Kashmir. Amid this all Congress can emerge a winner as kingmaker the way it remained in the previous two regimes," the analyst said. With Omar's tweets having created scope for a new dialogue, his party leaders feel to have been left red-faced. "His kidding on the social network has always proved disastrous for our party. Tomorrow if Congress and PDP form alliance they will say Omar Abdullah personally desired so. We'll be left with no room for a strong party," the party leader said. |
