Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Dec 11: At a time when lot of talk is going on with regard to return of Kashmiri Pandits to the valley some of the Pandit families living in a migrant camp here are being denied even the basic facilities for past nine months or so.
Early Times has learnt that 11 families living in the migrant camp of Sheikhpora in Central Kashmir's Budgam district are not being given the free ration for the past so many months. These families despite being entitled to the free ration have been denied the same since April this year.
"We were getting free ration for the last so many years despite the fact that there were some hiccups in between at times. This year we got the free ration up to March and since then it has been stopped. Since April we are not being provided free ration for the reasons best known to the concerned people," said a group of aggrieved people while sharing views with Early Times.
The aggrieved people said that they have been tossed from one department to other department with no light at the end of the tunnel. They said the responsibility is yet to be fixed on officials and as such no action whatsoever has been taken against the 'erring' officials.
"We visited the office of Relief Commissioner and enquired from there about the reasons for stoppage of free ration. We were told that the problem lies with the Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CAPD) department. On our visit to CAPD department we were told that the fault lies with the Relief Commissioner's office," said the aggrieved people.
It would be in place to mention here that free ration has been stopped with respect to 10 Kashmiri Pandit and one Muslim family that are putting up at migrant colony of Sheikhpora. These families are living at this migrant colony for the past 11 years and are the original residents of Budgam district.
"Since we are registered with the office of Relief Commissioner we are entitled to free ration. We have been given the necessary slips for the receipt of free ration, but the follow up action is missing since the past nine months. It is highly unfortunate that the concerned officials are yet to take the corrective action in this regard and we have been left to suffer like anything," said aggrieved people.
These people said that since free ration has been stopped to them they are forced to purchase the same from the open market at higher rates than the government rates. Given the 'inaction' from the people at helm there is no free ration for these families already facing many problems. Relief Commissioner R K Pandita did not pick up the call from this correspondent. When asked about his response over the issue through a message, Pandita did not deem it fit to reply back. Repeated attempts to contact Director CAPD department Abdul Rashid War also failed since his mobile was coming out of reach.
