SKIMS 'plays politics' over acid victim's treatment
Year on, poor patient struggles for respite

Early Times Report

Srinagar, Dec 11: The authorities of SKIMS, Srinagar have been playing "dirty politics" over providing treatment to an acid attack victim who on this very day in 2014 was brought there in a critical condition but couldn't even get satisfactory preliminary first-aid.
Though within days she was subsequently airlifted to Chennai for specialized treatment, till now the state government is unable to fully pay for her costly treatment as the SKIMS is not ready to accept that it cannot provide requisite facilities for the treatment.
On December 11, 2014, two stalkers threw acid on her face when this 21-year-old student was about to enter her Law College in Soura locality here. A year on the acid-victim cries unheard while her family struggles to afford resources for more surgeries.
Till now she has undergone as many as eight major surgeries in Chennai and is scheduled to undergo more in the coming times. But the family is facing financial problems as the government has expressed inability to fully fund her treatment if it's not taken up at SKIMS. Every such surgery costs lakhs of rupees.
"Even though SKIMS failed to provide even the initial treatment properly, the hospital authorities are unwilling to give in writing that they cannot treat her only because of their ego problem," the family said.
Ironically, the Director SKIMS is understood to have told the government that the hospital was equipped with facilities for the treatment though acid attack cases are rare in Kashmir.
Doctors in know of the matter said it was "ridiculous that the SKIMS medicos want to exploit this girl's misery for personal gains."
"They seem to be using this girl as guinea pig only to pretend before the government that the acid victim can be treated whereas as the fact is that SKIMS has very little expertise of dealing with acid cases," said a senior doctor adding "treatment to acid victim was far different from any routine burn injury."
Sources said a delegation of senior doctors had asked the SKIMS authorities to inform the government that such a treatment was difficult at their hospital. "But those who are looking for extension in services want to show that everything is up to the mark," the doctors said.
Given the apprehensions of her improper treatment at SKIMS, the family is not taking any risks and so are doing "beg borrow and steal" to manage financial resources for her further treatment in Chennai.
While the victim was scheduled to undergo surgery in the metropolis this month, recent floods there have hindered the plans. "It may take a fortnight more before we leave for Chennai," the family said.
On this day, the poor girl, pursuing her Bachelors of Law from Kashmir University, was attacked by two car borne. Police has identified 23-year-old mastermind as Irshad Ahmad Wani aka Sunny son of Muhammad Amin of Wazir Bagh. The other one, his friend and business partner is perpetrator, 21-year-old Muhammad Omar Noor son of Noor Muhammad of Bemina.
While the accused are behind the bars, the victim is struggling for treatment.
"The biggest problem for us has been created by the ego of SKIMS authorities who have been risking the life of our daughter for personal gains," the family said.
When contacted a SKIMS doctor said it was not possible for them to tell the government that she cannot be treated at the hospital. "We deal with burn injuries so we cannot say no," the doctor said.
When asked that acid victims are rare cases and thus they lack expertise, he said: "Well that's a separate story. You better contact the Director." Despite repeated attempts the Director SKIMS could not be contacted for comments.
