JK to witness brief spell of Guv rule | Mehbooba declines to take oath as CM for time being | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Jan 8: Jammu & Kashmir is all set to witness brief spell of Governor's rule as Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti has shown no inclination to take oath as new Chief Minister of State in a day or two. Mehbooba is tipped to replace her father Mufti Mohammad Sayeed as Chief Minister who passed away on Thursday in the morning at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) New Delhi. Sources in PDP told Early Times that Mehbooba is 'devastated' and shocked after the death of her father and is in no hurry to take oath as the new Chief Minister of the State. Mehbooba is yet to come out of the shock and as such it would take some days before she takes oath as the new CM of Jammu & Kashmir, sources said. At the same time, Governor Narendra Nath Vohra has sent letters to PDP President and State President of Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) Sat Paul Sharma asking them to make their position clear over the Government formation in the State. A Raj Bhavan spokesman said that besides being in touch with the leadership of coalition Government partners, Governor N.N. Vohra has also addressed letters by fax to Mehbooba Mufti, President PDP and Sat Paul Sharma, President BJP, to urgently inform him about their respective positions regarding formation of the new Government. Since the PDP President seems to be in no hurry to take oath as the Chief Minister of State it is for sure that Jammu & Kashmir would witness yet another spell of Governor's Rule, even though for a brief period. Over the last one year or so it would be second time that the State would come under the Governor's Rule. In January 2015, Governor's Rule had to be imposed in the State since there was delay in formation of State Government after 2014 Assembly elections threw up a hung Assembly with no party getting absolute majority. The Governor's Rule came to an end on March 1 when Mufti Mohammad Sayeed took oath as the head of PDP-BJP Government in the State. It would be in place to mention here that many people including some media persons were of the opinion that Mehbooba would take oath as CM on Thursday or today, but that did not happen. Interestingly some of the newspapers carried the story that the oath taking ceremony of the new Chief Minister would take place anytime today. "Although some of the senior PDP leaders tried their best to persuade the party President to take oath at the earliest, but they failed to motivate Mehbooba. She in clear terms told them that the same is not possible in near future. As such it is understood that the oath taking ceremony would take place only after Monday. There are chances that same may be held on Tuesday (January 12) since it coincides with 80th birthday of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed," said sources. Sources said that PDP leaders have understood that since the party President was very close to her father, it would be in tune to allow her to mourn Mufti's demise who was also the Patron of PDP. The PDP leaders have also understood that Mehbooba wants to be with her family members especially with her mother at this emotional point of time. In the meantime, BJP National General Secretary Ram Madhav arrived here today and carried out a meeting with PDP President. Madhav who is the party in-charge for Jammu & Kashmir expressed grief over the demise of Mufti and conveyed his sympathies with Mehbooba and the other family members. Later Madhav chaired a meeting of BJP Ministers and legislators and took an overview of the situation within the party after the demise of Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. Emerging out after the meeting the BJP General Secretary said that it may take three or four days for the new Chief Minister to take oath. He said that since the PDP President is in State of shock it is not wise to talk about Government formation at this juncture. |
