Five militants, two security forces personnel killed in night long encounter in Kupwara | | | S Tahir-ul Haq Early Times Report KUPWARA, Feb 13: At least five militants and two soldiers were killed in an overnight gun battle, while as two army soldiers were injured here in the Marsari village of Chowkibal area. A senior police official said that the encounter began on Friday afternoon when security forces received information about the presence of 4-5 militants in Marsarri village in Chowkibal area of Kupwara. He said that a joint team of army's 41 Rashtriya Rifles, 16 Garhwal and the police's Special Operation Group (SOG) were part of the operation. "The army approached towards the suspected house where militants were hiding. The approaching party came under heavy volume of fire from the upper floor of Ghulam Muhammad Wani's house," the official told Early Times. However, the official said soldiers engaged the militants, till the additional reinforcement was called in and they cordoned off the house to prevent escape of the heavily armed militants. The operation which continued overnight resulted in the elimination of five militants. The gun fight ended on Saturday afternoon after the house in which the militants were hiding was completely destroyed. Superintendent of Police, Aijaz Ahmad said that on Friday afternoon, security forces got information about the presence of militants in Marsari village of Chowkibal area. He said the contact with the militants was established after which an operation was launched along with army. "Going by their dresses and weapons it indicates that they have recently infiltrated from the other side of Line of Control (LoC) in Chowkibal area. The group and identity of the dead militants could not be ascertained, but most probably they belong to Jaish-e Mohammad (JeM) militants outfit and five AK-47 Rifles, twenty five magazines, white dresses, one radio set, grenades, and Ice Axe besides a huge quantity of ammunition and other war like stores have been recovered from the site of encounter," said SP Kupwara. Two army personnel also lost their lives in the encounter. They were identified as Naik Shinde Shankar Chandrabhan of Nasik in Maharashtra and Gunner Sahadev Maruti of Bijapur Karnataka. It is pertinent to mention here that in the same border district, during the intervening night of January 29 and 30, three militants of LeT were killed in an encounter in Lolab village. The then operation was jointly launched by 28 Rashtriya Rifles and special operations group (SOG) against militants in Dardapora village of Lolab area in Kupwara district on the late evening of January 29. A top commander of LeT Abu Usama was killed, while as his two associates were killed on the next day in the same area. |
