Tourism Deptt to promote local culture in Jammu Festival | Cultural Academy to involve local artists | | Early Times Reports Jammu, Apr 2: The tourism department has decided to promote local culture by involving Jammu artists in the 3-day Baisakhi Festival commencing from April 13. The decision to this effect was taken by the department after Early Times published a news item in its March 21 issue under the caption -- Jammu Festival: How can Punjabi artists promote Dogra Culture? During a meeting convened by Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, it was disclosed that a number of cultural events shall be the attraction in Jammu Festival which will include procession as per past practice showcasing rich culture of Jammu division to be started from Vivekananda Chowk to Mubarkh Mandi. According to official sources, it was enjoined upon tourism department to promote rich cultural heritage which should be manifested during the festival and programs shall be organised at different locations including Mubarkh Mandi, Bagh-a-Bahu, Preerkho, Balidan Stambh, Ranbir Canal, Amar Mahal and border area of Suchetgarh in an effort to promote tourism potential through Dogra culture. Besides performances in Dogri, Gojri, Pahari and Bhaderwahi, tonga ride from historical Kanak Mandi would also be organised. Various stalls of ethnic food would also be set for up tourists. A Kavi Sammelan by poets of Dogri, Pahri, Gojri and Punjabi shall be held during the festival. Tourism Department was directed to involve J&K Cultural Academy, Jammu, and design the festival by incorporating the suggestions given by various stakeholders to make Jammu Festival as an attraction for tourists and local spectators. Talking to Early Times, cultural academy's additional secretary A S Amn informed that in order to showcase divergent local culture and Dogra heritage in Jammu festival, the J&K Cultural Academy of Art, Culture and Languages shall enrol local artists and cultural troupes of Jammu division to perform in festival which was decided in a meeting chaired by Divisional Commissioner, Jammu. "This is the real approach to celebrate Jammu Festival for promoting Dogra Culture," he said, adding that the efforts were afoot to give attractive shape to the cultural activities to be held in the festival. A number of heads of cultural clubs were agog with happiness and appreciated the decision of the government to promote local culture in the festival which was the basic concept of starting Jammu Festival way back in 1994. Pertinent to mention that Early Times had reported that tourism department should re-visit its policy of tourism promotion through local festivals of the state and desist from pumping out big chunk of funds meant for cultural events to pay to artists from outside the state as local artists who can better showcase rich divergent culture of Jammu on lesser remuneration are getting raw deal at the hands of department.
