'WB, TN, Kerala, Puducherry reject PM Modi's policies' | Position in Jammu no different | | Early Times Report Jammu, Apr 2: April Ist turned out to be a very disappointing day for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah and their team as well as for the RSS, which enjoys absolute power sans any responsibility. The case in point is the opinion poll conducted by C-Voter for Times Now and India TV in the five poll-bound States of West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam and Puducherry. The opinion poll was conducted in the fourth week of March. Remember, these five States together return to the Lok Sabha as many as 116 members. The opinion poll predicted a land slide victory of Trinamool Congress of Mamta Bannerjee in West Bengal, of the Left Front in Kerala, of AIADMK of Jaya Jaylalitha in Tamil Nadu, of the Congress in Puduchery and neck-to-neck race in Assam. The opinion poll said that the Congress would be routed in Kerala, where the Left Front is all set to dislodge the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) and predicted that the AIADMK and Trinamool Congress would again win the Assembly elections hands down. The opinion poll also said that the Congress will form Government in Puducherry. As for Assam, the opinion poll said that the BJP+ has a slight edge over the Congress. The BJP+ may win 55 seats, as against the Congress' predicted tally of 53 seats in the 114-member House. The Congress has been in power in Assam for the last 15 years. This means the Congress is still a force to reckon with in Assam. It could even beat the anti-incumbency factor as the opinion poll said that the Congress got more votes during the opinion poll as compared to the BJP+. The fact is that even Assam doesn't really present a rosy picture for the BJP, which has been trying its level best to capture Assam for the first time. In the last Lok Sabha election, the BJP had led in 79 Assembly constituencies. The opinion poll has said that the BJP will get no seat in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, no seat out of 140 in Kerala and zero out of 30 seats in Puducherry. In other words, the BJP will not win a single seat out of 404 Assembly seats into which these three States are territorially divided. In West Bengal, the tally of the BJP could be only 4. West Bengal has 294 Assembly constituencies. All this suggests that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP as a party have miserably failed to strike a chord with the electorate of West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry and that the BJP has a slight edge over the Congress in Assam. If the pre-poll prediction turns out to be accurate, it would be considered the personal defeat of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as he is leading the party from the front in at least three major States. The election results will further weaken his position in the country. The BJP already lost two crucial Assembly elections in Delhi and Bihar in 2015 and these defeats were attributed to his failure to deliver on any front. It would not be out of place to mention here that the plight of the BJP in Jammu region would be no different if Assembly elections in the State are held today. It would be its great victory of the BJP won even half a dozen seats. It has become so unpopular in the region because of its acts of omission and commission and the dirty politics that it played after winning 25 seats in the 2014 Assembly elections. The BJP knew it and that's the reason that it again let down the people of Jammu region by accepting all the terms and conditions set by the PDP - an act that has further eroded its support-base in the region. The point is that the BJP leadership will not learn lessons from its past mistakes, as the power has gone into its head. It's living in its own world and that's why it is losing ground across the country at a very rapid pace and not able to retain control even in the States where it had considerable support-base. |
