Teacher beats student for remaining absent | Corporal Punishment | | Early Times Report Rajouri, Apr 30: Yet another case of corporal punishment surfaced in a Government High School in this frontier town on Friday, a ninth class student, was severely beaten allegedly by a teacher for remaining absent for one day. A student Ishtiyaq Ahmed son of Muhammad Rafiq of Government High School at Gurdhanbala failed to attend the school on Thursday due to some domestic work as his father is serving in Saudi Arabia. On Friday class teacher Zakir Hussain asked him why he remained absent and started beating the student with a wooden stick. "Student after school time brought the matter into the notice of his mother who contacted the teacher on phone demanding explanation but the teacher also misbehaved with her," sources said. "Meanwhile student along with his mother came to meet the Chief Education Officer (CEO)Rajouri but couldn't meet him as the officer was out of station," sources said, adding, "Later the duo met Suresh Sharma, District Education Planning Officer (DEPO) and showed the marks of brutal beating by the teacher." They said, "DEPO Suresh Sharma assured investigations and action against the erring teacher if the complaint of the student and his mother was found genuine." "Corporal punishment in the schools has been banned by the Apex Court. The incident will be investigated. If the teacher is found guilty suitable action would be taken against him under law," Sharma said. Meanwhile, a teacher said that corporal punishment in government schools in Rajouri district is a common phenomenon to restrain the students so that they don't expose the flaws in school/education system before the high level teams which visit the schools. |
