Battered BJP puts up united face | Non-performers get ultimatum | | ET Report srinagar, Apr 30: Under pressure to perform Bhartiya Janta Party's Kashmir unit on Saturday organized a rally in central Kashmir's Ganderbal district to mark the beginning of political activities of the party in the Valley and to make its presence felt. Sources said that BJP's Kashmir unit is under scanner for non-performance and failing to build the party's base in Kashmir. "Top BJP leaders participated in today's rally and assured the people that party would work for the development of the state," they added. Insiders revealed that BJP leaders have been asked to put up the united face and reach out to people with the message of the party. "BJP leaders till date have not held any meeting in Kashmir as everyone believes that he or she are big leaders," they added. Sources said the BJP leaders have reportedly told the party high command that their ministers have to cooperate if party wants to build its base in Kashmir. "BJP ministers have to cooperate with the party activists and have to remain accessible to the masses," the BJP leaders are understood to have told the party high command. Insiders said that party high command had sought a detailed report from the BJP leaders based in Kashmir about the performance of the party ministers during the first stint of ten months of the PDP-BJP coalition government headed by late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. The BJP leaders, according to the sources, had informed the party high command that during the tenure of late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, BJP ministers did not pay any heed towards the requests of the party activists and leaders. "If BJP wants to make inroads in the Valley its leaders and ministers would have to work overtime as people are disillusioned with them," sources added. They said the forthcoming ULB elections could prove to be a litmus test for the BJP as they would have to work very hard to woo the voters. "BJP high command has made it clear to the party leaders that they have to leave their cozy rooms and stop issuing press statements which don't make sense. They have been asked to reach out to the people so that BJP becomes popular in Kashmir," sources added. A senior BJP leader while talking to Early Times said, "The rally which was held at Ganderbal today was just a beginning. We have planned many more such rallies across Kashmir and we hope our ministers would come forward and help us in reaching out to people." |
