Early Times Report
Srinagar, May 1: For 75-year-old Mukhti Begum, it was time for her children to look after her. But the destiny has something else stored for the destitute family.
Mukhti, who lives in Sandoo village of south Kashmir's Anantnag district has two children but both are disabled since birth.
Her daughter, Hajira Begum, 45 is blind while the younger son, Mohammad Shaban, 35, is lame and has partial sight. They live in a mud house.
"My son is running a small shop for the last 10-years which is the only source of income for my family," Mukhti told Her husband Lassa Hajam, a barber died due to blood pressure when both her children were below 20-years of age. Since then she has been looking after her disabled children. "I faced immense problems after my husband's death but no one helped me. I went several times to higher authorities for help but no one was bothered to listen to me," she said adding she could not afford treatment to her children due to poverty so that they could live a normal life.
What haunts Mukhti what will happen to her children after her death and who will look after them.
"Even some customers cheat my son when they purchase something from the shop and take undue advantage of his disableness."
Shaban says that he is running the small shop to feed his family. "How will my family survive if I don't run the shop?"
Ghulam Hassan Ganie, a local resident said the government should help the poor family as they earn a meagre income from running small shop.
"Shaban is a role model for the society who despite being disable is running the shop to feed his family members."
