Administration destroys banned Opium in Kishtwar, drive to continue | ET Impact | | Asif Iqbal Naik Early Times Report Jammu, May 1: A day after "Early Times carried the news titled "Despite ban, opium cultivation continues in Kishtwar "District Administration Kishtwar launched a massive drive against the illegal cultivation of Opium crop in many areas of the District. As per the details available with "Early Times" Deputy Commissioner Kishtwar Ghulam Nabi Balwan constituted the team of revenue officials headed by Tehsildar Kishtwar Arun Sharma along with police team from Police Station Kishtwar rush to adjoining areas in and around Kishtwar town and destroyed the Opium crop as well as cannabis crop used for preparation of Charas. When contacted Deputy Commissioner Kishtwar Ghulam Nabi Balwan confirmed that revenue team from District office Kishtwar headed by Tehsildar Kishtwar conducted raids at many places in Kishtwar and destroyed the opium crop on spot added that strict direction were issued to the people not to cultivate the crop as it was banned by the government. He said that the drive against Opium cultivation and cannabis will remain continue and said that senior police officers had been instructed to take stern action against the persons involved in drug trading added that directions had also been issued to keep check on sale of illicit liquor and distillation in the area. When contacted Deputy Excise Commissioner Jammu Shahid Saleem said that department has already issued strict directions to field officers with regard to destruction of Opium crops. "We are in no mean to tolerate any cultivation of the Opium crop in any part of the state--- any person who will indulge in such practice will be dealt strictly" said Shahid Saleem. In response to the news item published in today's edition of "Early Times", Deputy Excise Commissioner Jammu said that the matter will be looked into seriously and assured action in this behalf. In response to the question regarding reports of increase in sale of illicit liquor in posh localities of Kishtwar town and its adjoining areas, Deputy Excise Commissioner Jammu said that the matter will be looked into and necessary directions will also be issued to the field staff for prompt action. |
