PDP-BJP: From ideological opponents to cohesive partners | | | Abodh Sharma
Early Times Report
Jammu, May 1: If Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti vouching for developing Jammu as independent tourist destination and Dy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh inaugurating the winter games event at Gulmarg is any indication, the second innings of the PDP-BJP coalition has taken off at the right note with both partners gelling together to project State Government as one entity rather than a coalition of two ideologically opposed political dispensations. Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti's whirlwind tour of Jammu's major tourism projects from Suchetgarh border to Mubarak Mandi and her reiteration to time bound completion of Jammu's hyped tourism projects and Inauguration of winter games event at Gulmarg one day after the Durbar closed at the winter capital are seen as indications that the coalition partners have decided to pursue the agenda of development defying the traditional regional divide between Jammu and the Valley. History has been witness that the Coalition Governments in the state have failed to overcome this regional divide and have worked to satiate their respective constituencies rather than the state in its entirety, which has further widened the wedge between the two regions. The state has been governed by coalitions between NC-Congress and PDP-Congress, with Congress, which largely represented the Jammu region, being common factor between the two arch political rival parties which have their base and vote bank in the Valley. In all these coalitions, the constituents worked to nurture within the government, the differences which existed within the people of two regions and never endeavoured to unite the people of the state. Under the NC- Congress coalition headed by Omar Abdullah as the CM and Tara Chand as the Dy CM, the regional divide widened unprecedentedly and infamous summer unrest of the 2010 was the result of this widening wedge. However, the Government survived full term. Before that, the PDP-Congress Coalition led by Late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed also witnessed this regional divide getting deep and wide as infamous Shri Amarnath land row resulted in worst agitation in Jammu in 2008. This Government had to be aborted as few months after PDP passed on the baton to Congress and Ghulam Nabi Azad became the CM for remaining three years. Political watchers believe that the partisan attitude of the political class had a cascading effect on the people of the state and while the politicians gained from politics of divide, the state lost woefully; and if the manner in which the present government has taken off is beyond mere symbolism, the state shall usher into a new era of development by this cohesive coalition of ideologically opposed political; dispensations. |
