Early Times Report
Kathua, May 2: Atleast 4000 hectares of land including agricultural land, wildlife and population is badly affected due to poor irrigation grid i.e. networking of canals/rivers water schemes in Kathua District but the concerned Irrigation Department yet to have take a cue to manage the damage control. Meantime the water scarcity at tail-ends of canals has fueled the protest in some villages. As per sources, the poor network of water supply system i.e. rivers/ canals has left a bad impact on irrigation of agricultural land but it seems that Irrigation department which yet has failed to enshoulder its duties accordingly virtually has left farmers on the mercy of Almighty. "Farmers from entire district Kathua in general and particularly in Kandi belt are solely dependent upon irrigation system as they use water for drinking, irrigation and other domestic chores are badly affected due to reluctant approach of the concerned department, sources said. Farmers from village Raghu chack, Panchayat Gaghwal today staged protest pointed out the functioning of Ravi Tawi Water Lifting Scheme and concerned Irrigation Department while terming it mute spectator of their problems. Babu Ram among protestors alleged on department for not taking interest to cleanliness of the canals/rivers water lifting schemes resulting drought like situation in tail end villages. Protestors said few labourers from irrigation department came to clean the rivers but they went back without doing any job but reportedly got wages courtesy unholy nexus within department. They also said nothing has been done at ground level in the name of cleaning of canals and matter needs to be probed with strict action against erring officials and contractors. Another farmer Ram Kumar said BJP government claims for introducing beneficial schemes to facilitate farmers but all seems to be confined to papers only as the farmers at ground level still are being harassed from every side. The farmers demanded cleanliness of the irrigation grid properly so that sufficient water can be provided to the farmers even to tail ends. They also threatened to state wide protest if Irrigation department fails to manage the due water supply. When contacted to JE Irrigation Deptt Rajesh Kumar admittingly said that the cleanliness has not been done properly resulting low water level. He however added that tendered were called but the contractors did not perform their duty effectively compelling department to issue notices to defaulting contractors. JE also ensured adequate/sufficient water supply to all farmers in coming three days. |
