After 2 days drive by administration, Excise Department, police join drive against Opium cultivation | | | Asif Iqbal Naik
Early Times Report Jammu, May 2: After successive reporting on resorting to open cultivation of Opium crop in many areas of Kishtwar District, Excise Department having sole responsibility of eradication of drugs from the society as well as keeping an eye on cultivation of opium crops today joined the team of Kishtwar police and officials from District administration Kishtwar in ongoing operation to destroy Opium crops in the area which was started on the directions of Deputy Commissioner Kishtwar in wake of the aftermath of the news carried by the "Early Times" two days ago. As per the details available with "Early Times"a joint team of District Police Kishtwar and Excise department headed by Inspector Afzal Wani, SHO Police Station Kishtwar and Excise Range Officer Towsif Wani under the supervision of Sandeep Kumar Wazir SSP Kishtwar launched special drive in the adjacent villages of Kishtwar town and destroyed 2 Kanals of illicit cultivation of Opium plants in village Cherhar which falls under the jurisdiction of Police Station Kishtwar. The locals informed the "Early Times" that strong contingent of police including lady cops encircled the whole village so as to prevent any obstruction from the farmers and destroyed the Opium crops without any intervention from the land owners. The drive was continued in adjoining areas when last report came. When contacted DC Kishtwar Ghulam Nabi Balwan said that police had undertaken the drive against Opium cultivation in many areas of the District added that the crop is being destroyed in a systematic manner. He said that administration and police along with Excise Department sleuths first identified the areas and later destroy it. He said that besides destruction of Opium crops, Police and Excise teams had also been instructed to destroy cannabis crops and sale of illicit liquor. He said that the drive will remain in force till the desired results could be achieved. While talking to "Early Times", the general public appreciated the prompt action of the administration to curb the menace of Opium cultivation added that many youths had fallen prey to drugs in the society and also appreciated the role of "Early Times" in highlighting the issue of public importance. The people urged upon Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and Commissioner Secretary Excise to constitute special Excise squads for conducting effective and constant surprise raids in the area to check illegal activities which include illicit trade of liquor and distillation. |
