SRINAGAR, May 2: Scores of employees of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) including the Safai Karamcharis today staged a massive protest here at SMC Head Office against the alleged callous attitude of the higher authorities towards their demands from about past three months. The protesting employees said that a delegation of theirs met several times with higher authorities of SMC and submitted a 'chatter of demands' but no positive action was taken till date. "Earlier there was a Municipality in Srinagar city with 210 square kilometers and now it is corporation and has been extended to 300 square kilometres but the strength of staff has not been extended, which is major setback to employees," employees told Early Times. The employees said that the field staff should be given additional salary as they don't enjoy two and half holidays in a month, adding there are other employees of various other departments who enjoys holidays at regular intervals. "Food safety officer, working supervisors and other employees must be adjusted so that work load will get reduced, and one man, one post formula be adopted at SMC," said one of the protesters. Meanwhile, General Secretary Employees Union SMC Shabir Ahmad Sofi said that from past several days they are protesting against the injustice which is being done with hundreds of employees. "We are protesting only after 2 pm as Secretariat has not opened yet here in Srinagar. If our demands are not met in time, we will gherao the secretariat and impress upon the authorities to fulfill our demands at the earliest," said the General Secretary. He said that hundreds of employees have submitted their files for Departmental Promotion Committees, but they are biting the dust from past four months due to which employees couldn't pay attention towards their duties. He said that issuance of promotion orders of municipal employees of various cadres and regularization of consolidated employees of SMC has been kept in backburner despite the fact that they have completed seven years of service. "Need of the hour is to engage more people, so that work load on employees gets reduced and infrastructure should be put in place so that employees will not suffer at large," said Sofi. |
