NHRC issues notice in Srinagar NIT row | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, May 3: Taking cognizance of a petition filed by law students of Jammu University with it about human rights violations of non-Kashmiri students in Srinagar NIT, NHRC has issued notice to the concerned authority, asking him to submit a report in the matter within four weeks. Some law students of Jammu University had filed a petition with NHRC (National Human Rights Commission), seeking its intervention in the recent Srinagar NIT issue. "Non-Kashmiri students in Srinagar NIT are under grave threat of security and personal safety. They have been virtually made state's prisoners and many have been confined to the college campus without their will and choice. The state of affairs and security situation of students is so worse and serious that non-Kashmiri girl students are even threatened of rape and molestation. Media is not allowed to enter the campus which further exposes the state's intention to stifle the lawful voice of non-Kashmiri students. The non- Kashmiri students have been beaten mercilessly and treated with brutality by J&K police personnel, which further has aggravated the miseries of students and created an atmosphere of terror and fear for the non-Kashmiri students inside the campus," reads the petition. NHRC, after considering the petition vide case file No 50/9/13/2016, diary No 58973, issued notice to the concerned authority, asking it to submit report to the commission within four weeks. It is pertinent to mention that the petitioners have prayed to the apex rights body to constitute a fact finding committee and issue directions to state government to take strict action against the police officials who used cruel and brute force against non-Kashmiri students and ensure safety and security of all non-locals studying in Srinagar NIT. |
