Sordid saga of Tourism deptt in Jammu | Tourism authorities understaffed, defunct, infrastructure in shambles | | Asif Iqbal Naik Early Times Report JAMMU, May 3: Contrary to the tall claims of successive government with regards to promotion and tapping of vast tourism potential in various areas of the Jammu Division, the systematic neglect by the department of tourism is causing slow death of the places with huge tourist potential in the region. Despite enormous scope of Tourism in Kishtwar, Doda, Poonch, Kathua, Rajouri and other areas, people from these far-flung areas have to come to either Batote or Jammu for the registration and renewal of their units whereas it should be done at District Headquarter of every District. Like other areas of the division, Kishtwar District of Jammu Division once known as tourism hub for its vast tourism potential is also losing its shine with the passage of time as government left the Kishtwar Development Authority created by late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed government in 2008 at the mercy of God. With an aim to give an uplift to tourism in Kishtwar District, the tourist hostel was constructed at Kishtwar which was inaugurated by former Chief Minister Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah on 25.6.1978 and the hostel acted as transit camp for tourist who were traveling to Kishtwar which is famous for trekking and mountaineering in treks like Padder-Omasila-Ladakh and Marwah-Warwan-Nunkhun-Pahalgam , but due to outbreak of militancy in the state; the inflow of the tourist declined and the building was taken over by security forces. After hectic efforts of the government, forces vacated it in 2007, but even after 9 years both tourism office and building are in dilapidated condition and waiting for the attention of the government. Though late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed government created Kishtwar Dev Authority in 2008 and provided funds to it, but even after spending crores of rupees, the authority failed to create a good quality Picnic spot and the buildings like Tourist Reception Center Kishtwar, Saffron Saffari at Poochal, Water sports Park at Dool were occupied by druggist and gamblers. Like Kishtwar, the tourism in many parts of Jammu Division suffered due to want of funds as well as staff as approximately 50 % posts of Tourism Officer along with others ministerial staff are lying vacant. There has been no re-organization of Department since decades together while at the same time the officers promoted in tourism department since decades have not been confirmed by PSC or by the Departmental Promotion Committees till date. The people urged up on the Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti who also holds the charge of Tourism Ministry to issue necessary instruction for making defunct tourism authorities and assets across the Jammu Division including in Kishtwar functional and seek her attention towards dilapidated condition of the TRC Kishtwar building. |
