Udhampur, May 3: In the absence of lower staff i.e. peons and orderlies, the students of government schools in Udhampur district are forced to do menial jobs including fetching water and even sweeping class rooms. In a glaring example of such an ugly practice at the Govt Primary School Londana just a few kms away from the main town of Udhampur, teachers compel students to do all odd jobs. According to locals the school runs on the whims of teachers posted there. "They (students) are seen fetching water in jerry cans, or doing other jobs like sweeping class rooms etc," they said, adding, " We're told by teachers to follow the directions or face consequences," some students alleged. "Students who belong to poor families and whose parents send their wards to the schools in hope of a good future have no knowledge about what their wards face on the name of schooling," some locals said. When contacted Chief Education Officer (CEO) Bishan Singh said, "It is very unfortunate." "School falls under the jurisdiction of Jib Education Zone I will seek details in this regard soon. strict action would be taken against anyone who is found guilty," he added.
