Early Times Report

Jammu, May 3: Kishtwar District is witnessing regular protests by residents against scarcity of drinking water as the natural and traditional sources of water are rapidly drying up, however, residents of a village have effectively used MGNREGA to not only earn their livelihood but also address the problem of scarcity of water to quite an extent.
Residents of Khundali in Panchayat Poochal A 1 of block Kishtwar where the women folk had to face stiff task to fetch the water from local spring have successfully addressed their problem through MGNREGA.
With the joint efforts of local Sarpanch Narayan Das, VLW Irshad Ahmed Waza, JE Majid Butt under the overall supervision of Block Development Officer Kishtwar Sunil Kumar Butyal and Assistant Commissioner Development Kishtwar Akther Qazi, a comprehensive plan was formulated to tap the spring water and the initiative finally paid the dividends as a result of which the villagers got respite from the water crisis.
While talking to "Early Times" BDO Sunil Kumar Butyal said that as per the directions of RDD Minister Abdul Haq Khan and MoS Sunil Kumar Sharma, the department has shifted its focus on asset creation. "Taping of spring water and its lifting was a heavy task but with the help of CDF provided by MLA Kishtwar Sunil Kumar Sharma and MLC Firdous Ahmed Tak, the project was completed and people of the village are getting its benefit in real sense" said the BDO.
He said that without disturbing the nature of the spring, department developed it and tapped the spring water by collecting it in a water tank from where with the help of the motor the water is being lifted and supplied to the villagers.
Elaborating on the project, ACD Kishtwar Akther Hussain Qazi said that the department has kept Rs. 5 lacs for construction of fully concrete water tank with capacity of around 50000 liters so that more and more adjoining areas facing water crisis could be covered. He said that after this successful venture, the department is planning similar ventures at other places so that the natural water could be tapped.
Meanwhile, further expansion of the project has hit the road block as some people are objecting to the initiative on various grounds.
MoS RDD Sunil Kumar Sharma who is also a legislator from Kishtwar assured that the matter will be resolved by taking everyone on board.
