Ahead of reshuffle, top cops busy highlighting 'performance' | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, May 19: Ahead of the much-awaited reshuffle in the police administration in the cabinet meeting scheduled for May 20, some of the top cops have been busy highlighting their performance to be in the good books of the new government led Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, who wants them to do "people-friendly tasks." From picking up brooms for sanitation, to holding sickle to chop down the poppy cultivation, senior police officials, including those of the rank of Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) are doing everything to prove their metal. A fortnight back SSP Baramulla, spent his Sunday off, leading a team of cops to clean the Baramulla town. Picking up broom, the SSP personally cleaned most of the muck from the streets, though the sanitation drive was carried out in "utmost hygienic conditions" amid use of disinfectants and sanitizers. The Baramulla police said the drive was undertaken to tell the people that police was with them even to keep the district roads neat and clean. While this was the scene in north Kashmir, since Mehbooba took oath on April 4, at least a dozen drives have been carried out in south Kashmir areas like Awantipora, Pulwama and Shopian to get rid of poppy cultivation. Such drives were led by officials including SSP Shopian and SP Anantnag. Baramulla Police also undertook drives to chop down Poppy cultivation. SSP Budgam on the other hand launched a helpline for students from the district studying outside state. Most of the SSP's heading various districts in Kashmir province have equally dedicated two-days a week for public meetings, whereby they are supposed to be present at their respective offices to meet aggrieved visitors. While Kulgam Police claimed to have intensified drive against burglars and night patrol, though militants recently sneaked into a police barrack and decamped with four service riffles from the cops sleeping there. Even as soon after taking over the Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti went up for a major shakeup in the civil administration, the transfers in police couldn't realize reportedly due to lack of consensus in the BJP leadership with regard to their choice of postings in Jammu province. |
