Govt succumbs to separatists, says no separate colonies for KPs | | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, May 19: The state government has succumbed to the pressure of separatists and has even gone to the extent of holding consultations with the separatist leaders over the return and rehabilitation of migrant Kashmiri Pandits to the Valley. It became evident during the press conference addressed by the Minister for Education and the government spokesman Naeem Akhtar here today. The government spokesman said that separate colonies for Kashmiri Pandits are not possible in Kashmir and the Pandits have to live within the society. Akhtar's statement runs contrary to the recent government's assertion that separate colonies would be set up for Kashmiri Pandits who wish to return and settle down in the Kashmir valley. BharatiyaJanta Party (BJP) which is in power with Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state have been stressing that Kashmiri Pandits would be rehabilitated in separate colonies in the Kashmir valley. However, the statement of government spokesman on this issue has put the BJP leaders in a quandary and they seem to be confused as how to proceed on this matter. It remains to be seen how the party leaders would respond to the statement of Akhtar that separatists would be taken on board on this important and sensitive issue. "Government is trying for dignified return of Kashmir Pandits. If the Hurriyat and mainstream parties have any objections within our plan, we can have a debate with them how to facilitate their return. I appeal the separatists and mainstream parties that if you find any objections, kindly tell us how to go," said the government spokesman during the press conference. Akhtar said that state government is open to debate on the issue so that all the misgivings are avoided. He said that there is a consensus on the return of the Kashmiri Pandits adding that the intricacies would discussed in due course of time. He said the civil society should lead the debate and the government would have no objection in following them. It would be in place to mention here that after coming to power in the centre the BJP had announced that 1600 kanals of land would be identified in Central, South and North Kashmir where separate colonies would be set for the Kashmiri Pandit families who want to return to the valley. However, till this date the land is yet to be identified for this process and the return of Kashmiri Pandits to the valley remains a big question. The BJP which is in power since March 1, 2015 in the state as well has failed to motivate its coalition partner PDP on the issue of return of Kashmiri Pandits. BJP and PDP are speaking in different voices on the issue and same became clear today as well during the press conference of government spokesman. |
