Strike, restrictions cripple life in Kashmir, separatist rally to Eidgah foiled | | | Jehangir Rashid
Early Times Report SRINAGAR, May 21: Normal life was affected in summer capital of the state and other places of Kashmir due to a strike call given by the separatists in commemoration of death anniversaries of Moulvi Mohammad Farooq and Abdul Gani Lone. Meanwhile, authorities imposed stringent restrictions in most areas of downtown Srinagar in order to foil the proposed rally of the separatists. At the same time most of the separatist leaders were either arrested or kept under house arrest by the administration in order to ensure that they don't take out the rally. Restrictions were imposed in areas falling under the jurisdiction of police stations of Nowhatta, Rainawari, Khanyar, Maharaj Gunj and Safa Kadal. Curbs were also put in place in some of the areas falling under the jurisdiction of police station Nigeen. Separatist leader and chairman of his faction of Hurriyat Conference, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq had asked people to march towards Eidgah in a rally and pay tributes to his father who is buried there at the Eidgah graveyard. He had also invited other separatist leaders like Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mohammad Yasin Malik to join him in the rally. However, the plan could not fructify since the Mirwaiz along with the other leaders were put under house arrest. While Geelani continues to be under house arrest at his Hyderpora residence, Mirwaiz and Malik were confined within four walls of their residences at Nigeen and Maisuma respectively. Some other middle rung as well as lower rung separatist leaders were also either arrested or put under house arrest. Hurriyat leader Muhammad Musadiq Adil led a group of activists to a graveyard in Sopore in North Kashmir and paid tributes to Moulvi Mohammad Farooq, Abdul Gani Lone and other persons who were killed in firing incident on this day at Hawal in 1990. In Nowshera, Awami Action Committee organized a rally, but the same was foiled by the authorities by arresting two dozen workers of the organization. It would be in place to mention here that Moulvi Farooq was killed by unidentified gunmen at his Nigeen residence on May 21, 1990. As his mortal remains were being carried to be buried at Eidgah police and security forces opened fire on the mourners leading to the death of around 60 persons belonging to different areas of the city. Twelve years later in 2002 gunmen killed Abdul Gani Lone father of incumbent Minister for Social Welfare, Sajad Gani Lone while he was present during the rally organized at Eidgah in commemoration of death anniversary of Moulvi Farooq. In the meantime, the separatist leaders have taken a dig at the state administration for imposing restrictions in the city and not allowing them to take out a march towards the Eidgah graveyard. The separatists have termed it as a defeat of the state government and also referred to it as writing on the wall for the people who are at the helm these days in the state. |
