Early Times Report
Srinagar, May 26: Expressing concern over the government's alleged failure to relocate Achan dumping site from Soura on the city outskirts, residents living around it claimed that the pungent smell emanating from 350 metric tons waste has made their life a virtual hell. The annoyed residents alleged that the government despite repeated assurances to mitigate the genuine problem of the people has failed to find alternative space for the dumping site which according to them has become cause of nuisance for the people living around it. "We have lost our faith from the government be it PDP, Congress or National Conference for the reason that our concerns vis-à-vis Achan dumping site have been ignored from time to time," Mohammad Yasin a local told 'Early Times'. The complainants said that the insensible approach in relocating the garbage site which spread over 700 kanals of land has put question mark on the government and adverse affect over the health of the people living around the site. The residents alleged that the government was buying time in identifying alternate garbage site with trash continues to be a major health problem for the residents. "We are already suffering from multiple health problems but it seems that the government is least bothered to address this long pending demand of the people there is an unbearable stench coming out of the dumping site which is totally unbearable and harmful," said another protester. He said that the stench is the result of lack of proper management of more than 350 metric tons of daily solid waste collected by the SMC which is dumped in Achan grounds. "The unbearable stench emanating from Achan garbage dump has made life miserable for thousands of residents of downtown Srinagar and its adjoining areas. The situation compounded mainly in summer season when the temperature starts to soar in with complaints of horrid stench pouring in from Lal Bazaar, Nigeen, Nowshera, Hawal, Zadibal, Nowhatta, Gojwara, Kawdara, etc," claimed he. He said for over two years now, the terrible stench rising from this untreated stockpile of squander site has been spreading to a large portion of lower Srinagar, turning life into a virtual hell for tens of thousands of residents. |
