Reservation bill divides Congress | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, May 26: The controversial stand of Congress Legislature Party leader Nawang RigzinJora and PCC president GA Mir on some vital issues is embarrassing the party leadership in Jammu. After beef controversy, the duo is now inviting trouble on the issue of continuing reservation in promotions, amendment for which in the State Constitution has been moved by the CLP leader Nawang Rigzin Jora during the ongoing budget session in Srinagar. The pro-reservation move of Congress, has invited sharp reaction from non-reserved categories in Jammu, which have announced to strongly defend the State High Court order against reservation in the promotion. However, in the entire controversy, Congress leaders from Jammu are feeling themselves in a catch twenty two situation as they fear that CLP leader's move is likely to boomerang here as the party is trying its best to regain support from the upper classes. According to the sources in Congress circles, the upper caste leaders of the party are critical of the CLP leader for his pro-reservation move. "Even as Congress is not against reservation, we should not oppose the High Court decision against quota in promotions and the party could have played safe over the issue for avoiding any controversy," said a senior Congress leader on the condition of anonymity. Earlier also, same Nawang Rigzin Jora and G A Mir had invited trouble to the State Congress leaders from Jammu by opposing ban on beef in Jammu and Kashmir. That time, Jora had said that people of Ladakh used to eat beef while G A Mir had announced to support the proposed amendment bill by National Conference for lifting ban on beef. It was former minister and PCC senior vice-president Sham Lal Sharma who had then taken a firm stand against lifting ban on beef and even warned the party high command against any attempt to play with the sentiments of Jammu people. The fresh controversy has similarly divided the party for and against the reservation even as the Congress leaders from Jammu are not yet vociferous over their stand. |
