Cong leaders divided over amnesty for stone pelters | | | Javaid Naikoo Early Times Report Srinagar, July 8: The Congress leaders of Jammu and Kashmir units of the JKPCC are at loggerheads over amnesty granted to stone pelters by the Government as Congress leaders of Kashmir have rejected statements of Jammu based leaders on the issue. In an astonishing move a Congress leader from Jammu earlier today while condemning the announcement of Amnesty for youth booked under charges of stone pelting termed the government move as "compromise with national security by BJP." "We strongly condemn the suo moto release of stone-pelters without scrutinizing the harshness of their offence." General Secretary of JKPCC and former Minister, Manohar lal Sharma said today. He said that "BJP and PDP both the parties are in government and alleged that Chief Minister Ms Mehbooba Mufti is "hell bent to implement her agenda" compromising the "national security for which the BJP was committed to the people of the nation, whether it was the issue of release of militants, stone-pelters or evacuation of bunkers from Srinagar". "Chief Minister is taking all the decisions on her own and the BJP which is sharing power in state and is in absolute majority at the centre, but has become mute spectators on these issues, BJP-PDP" he added. However minutes after his statement, senior congress leader of Kashmir and Vice President of JKPCC, Ghulam Nabi Monga while terming the statement of Manohar Lal as his personal view said that he is not authorized to talk on such issues. Monga told ET that 'Manohar lal is not authorized party spokesman to talk to anybody on such issues and therefore his statement on Amnesty for stone pelters should be taken as his personal view on the issue and not party statement. "If government has given stone pelters who are mostly youth a chance to live a new life and frame their career to live with dignity in society what is wrong in that and why should we oppose the move."Monga Said Pertinently after announcing Amnesty for Stone pelters during recently concluded Assembly session, Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti who also holds charge of Home Department last week gave a green signal to withdraw 104 stone pelting cases involving 634 youth of different parts of state and called for expediting review of the cases of youth booked on charges of stone-pelting since 2008. On her directions a three-member Committee constituted by the Government vide order No: 355-Home of 2016 dated: 26-06-2016, in its recommendations submitted to the Chief Minister is also proposing that the cases pertaining to the period between 2008 and 2014 be segregated and recommended for withdrawal in a phased manner. |
