Separatists call for shutdown, authorities to impose restrictions in parts of Kashmir today

Srinagar/Jammu, July 8: The Hizbul-Mujahideen self styled commander-Burhan Wani-- who had threatened to bombard the separate townships for Kashmiri Pandits in the Valley, was killed in an encounter with the security forces in south Kashmir on Friday.
Officials said that acting on specific input, special operations groups (SOGs) of police from Srinagar and Anantnag and Army's 9 RR cordoned off Bumdoora village of Kokernag.
Sources said minutes after the forces approached the HM hideout, Burhan's one accomplice fired a few shots and hurled a grenade. He was instantly killed by the forces in retaliatory action.
Eyewitnesses said the house in which the militants were hiding was razed to ground by the forces. Both Burhan and his another accomplice were also shot dead by the troops in the exchange of fire.
The Director General Of police K Rajendra himself confirmed his killing at Srinagar.
While sources identified Burhan's one slain accomplice as Sartaj Ahmad of Kokernag, identity of the other was yet to be established. Sartaj, a Pak-trained militant, had returned to the valley from PoK after 17 years, sources informed.
Burhan, who was instrumental in recruiting youth in the valley, carried a bounty of Rs 10 lakh on his head. He was involved in many deadly attacks across the valley. A resident of Dadsura Tral and son a government school teacher, he came to limelight after he and his squad had killed 7 army men of 3RR in Tral area of south Kashmir in an ambush. In past few years, his video messages threatening police, informers and Panchayat members were circulated on social networking sites by his outfit.
The tech-savy self styled commander of the Hizbul-Mujahideen used to upload pictures of his group on the social networking sites and was instrumental in making recruitments of the local youth in the outfit.
It's in place to mention here in first week of June this year Burhan had released 6:17 minute video dashing the very last hope of the displaced Kashmiri Pandits to return home. He had threatened that if government constructs separate colonies for the KPs his outfit would attack these dwellings and destroy them.
He had even threatened the policemen of attacks if action against the militants isn't stopped.
His video had put the security grid in Jammu and Kashmir on high alert and search for him and his accomplices was on.
Burhan Wani's close aide Tariq Pandit was arrested by police and army officials on May 29 this year.
Pandit had featured in pictures with Wani whose many associates were killed in various encounters.
Pandit was one of the 11 militants, led by Burhan Wani, who had posted photographs brandishing assault rifles on social networking sites such as Facebook last year. His arrest proved to be the last nail in the coffin of Burhan Wani as Pandit had revealed that millitants are eager to surrender.
Big success for security forces
A top police official said his killing has relieved the security agencies as he was being projected as the poster boy of the Generation Next militancy in Kashmir. "His killing is a big breakthrough for security forces," he added.
Separatists call for shutdown; Authorities to impose restrictions
Meanwhile, separatist organizations, including both the factions of the Hurriyat Conference (HC) and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) have called for a strike call on Saturday against the killing of Burhan and other militants.
In a statement here Geelani called appealed people to participate in his funeral prayers at Tral and said whosoever cannot reach Tral should offer funeral prayers in absentia in different areas across Kashmir. Apprehending trouble authorities have decided to impose curfew in old Srinagar City and Pulwama district on Saturday possibly to quell protests in wake of the Burhan's killing.
Deputy Commissioner Srinagar said curfew would remain in vogue in six police stations of old Srinagar city, including M R Gunj, Safakadal, Khanyar, Rainawari, Zadibal and Nowhatta. The curfew would also be imposed in the areas falling under the jurisdiction of Maisuma police station, he added.
Pulwama DC Muneeb-ul-Islam said strict curfew would be imposed in whole Pulwama district on Saturday.
The class 11th examinations scheduled to be held on Saturday have been postponed.
Officials said that class 11th examinations' which were to be held by Jammu and Kashmir State Board of School Education (JKBOSE) tomorrow have been postponed in view of the prevailing situation. The fresh date for the paper will be announced later.
