'White paper on funds allocation to Jammu, Kashmir' | BJP's betrayal | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, July 8: An impression has gained ground in Jammu province that its people got only peanuts in the budget which was approved in the just concluded budget session of the J&K Legislature. It is a different story that no Jammu lawmaker informed the public of Jammu province as to what they got and what Kashmir got. However, sources close to two Jammu-based MLAs reveal that the budget for the year 2016-2017 virtually excluded Jammu province and allocated funds to Kashmir more than what it deserved. Sources say that the PDP-BJP government earmarked substantial amount for the Kashmir water bodies and Srinagar city and virtually left the otherwise decaying water bodies in Jammu untouched or only a very meager amount was earmarked for them. Sources also reveal that the BJP minister, who holds the portfolios of Power Development Department and Urban and Housing Development, allocated funds to Kashmir, which were "three times" more than what Jammu province got. Similarly, sources say that the Public Health Engineering (PHE) and Irrigation Minister, who also hails from Jammu, preferred Kashmir over Jammu knowing it well that Kashmir is known for surplus water, very good irrigation system and so on. Besides, sources reveal that Jammu province was also ignored while allocating funds for road development, creating healthcare and education facilities and industrial development. "People of Jammu province are unfortunate. They never got what they rightfully deserved during all these years of the state's accession to India. In 2014, it was hoped that the victory of the BJP in Jammu province would change the Jammu's fate, but it has not happened. What has happened is to the contrary. The BJP has turned out to be more anti-Jammu than the Congress; it has caused more harm to Jammu as compared with the Congress. It has abdicated everything in favour of Kashmir and also given an extraordinary authority to Kashmir to hit Jammu below the belt and deny what it deserves," said a source close to the state's corridors of power, adding that the "people of Jammu province practically got nothing this year". It is only natural that the people of Jammu province are feeling badly let down and totally ignored. Some of them have cursed the Jammu electorate, saying "they committed a mistake by trusting the BJP", and even demanded a comprehensive white paper on what Kashmir got and what Jammu got. "Issue a white paper so that the people of Jammu province come to know as to what the budget for 2016-2017 gave to Jammu and allocated for Kashmir," they said, adding that "the issuance of a white paper is imperative to satisfy the people of Jammu province". |
