Collapse of new power infrastructure by windstorm punctures Govt claims | Newly erected poles break down, 20 yrs old remain intact……! | | Early Times Report Jammu, July 8: PDP-BJP government is once again under severe attack of opposition, this time albeit for an apolitical reason- massive damage to thepower infrastructure and consequent breakdown of electricity supply wrought by windstorm preceded by heavy downpour two days back. The opposition uproar is more for a fact that the electric poles so broken and damage inflicted to infrastructure including the cables were laid recently under a project financed under the Central government scheme. Sources said while reports of heavy damage to the newly erected electric poles along with requisite infrastructure in Jammu are pouring in almost every day from various localities in and around Jammu, the scenario has punctured tall claims of the government, particularly BJP ministers who until the other day were boasting of creating new power infrastructure as a gift to people of Jammu who remain aggrieved on the electricity front for one or the other front. When this project got off to start, BJP leaders contended the need for this was felt as the poles and infrastructureraised by previous governments had become old, as old as 20-25 years and therefore urgency of creating the new lines and poles, sources said. However, high speed winds on July 6 smashed not only the infrastructure but also the claims of government and power ministry as it were mostly newly erected poles that were uprooted, bent down completely or developed huge cracks in the supporting concrete slabs, substantiated in the pics sent in by public from various localities. On the contrary, the poles and infrastructure which the department claimed were old and needed replacement were seen intact, sources said. Sources said the heavy damage inflicted to new poles and infrastructure laid by the PDD under the centrally sponsored project has exposed substandard quality of work and the infrastructure so laid during the past couple of months. While the old poles referred to by the government as outdated remained intact, the new ones could not face just one vagary of weather, prompting opposition as also the general public to whip up criticism and raise questions on the quality of work and its worth in the backdrop of the fact that crores of rupees are being spent under the scheme. This infrastructure is being raised under new power distribution system under APRDP which is supposed to augment and improve power supply in the winter capital but on the contrary it caved in with just one gusty wind collapsing the power supply instantly. |
