Clashes, protests erupt in north Kashmir after Friday prayers | | | S Tahir-ul Haq ET Report baramulla, July 8: Intensive clashes erupted today after Friday congregational prayers at twin towns of north Kashmir's Kupwara and Baramulla district, dozens of youth injured, many detained. Early times got telephone calls from various sources across the north Kashmir, who said that clashes erupted shortly in Kupwara district after Friday congregational prayers. An eyewitness told early times that, the local youth engaged security personnel's in ding dong battles post Friday prayers. After Friday prayers, youth assembled at main Chowk of Kupwara and started pro-freedom sloganeering which prompted forces to react, said eyewitness. They said that youth destroyed make shift tin walls of CRPF camp. "Even the CRPF men destroyed the window panes of vehicles. Youth pelt stones on security forces which incited them in resorting tear gas shelling on agitated mob, after which the shopkeepers down their shutters at various places in Kupwara district. However early times attempted many telephone calls to get the version of senior police officials, but their numbers were either switched off or not reachable. Meanwhile amid anti-India protests erupted in Sopore town after Friday congregational prayers where scores of youth clashed with police that resulted in the shutdown of the market. Protests and stone-throwing were also witnessed in Sopore town. Besides, scores of private vehicles were also damaged in the stone-throwing, said sources. Sources said that, "The youth were chanting pro freedom slogans that resorted to indiscriminate stone-pelting on CRPF personnel. Security forces bursted tear-smoke shells to disperse the protesters. However the situation was brought under control after the clashes. Sources added that, 'Stone- pelters tried to target civilian vehicles however police resorted to tear gas shelling to disperse them. The provoked youth appeared on Sopore-Kupwara road and tried to block it for some hours. As a result of intense clashes between the youth and police, shopkeepers downed their shutters for the whole day, said sources. |
