Where are the ‘TALL’ leaders of Kashmir? | Azad boards Congress bus to UP, Farooq loses his voice | | Abodh Sharma Early Times Report
Jammu, July 24: Pictures of former Chief Minister of the state and leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad waving at the cameras on board Congress party’s bus that started its election journey to Uttar Pradesh have raised many eyebrows as one of the tallest leaders of the state did not care to visit Kashmir at this time of unprecedented turmoil but had all smiles to start symbolic political journey to assembly elections of UP, which have become synonymous to the very existence of Congress party. Azad’s exhaustive speech in the Rajya Sabha on prevailing situation in Kashmir after his party gave notice for a debate the previous day turned out to be mere empty recurring as the concerns he expressed over the situation in the Upper House never transformed into any action as he did not care to visit the Valley. Azad had during his speech said that BJP should not have formed government in the state as it had no acceptance in the valley, but Azad himself failed to play his role as a leader of the state despite his fair acceptance both in Jammu and Kashmir divisions. “Eventhough Azad is considered a national leader from the state, he failed to rise above party politics even during such difficult situation wherein he should have camped in the valley and played the role of a national leader” said Dheeraj, a political commentator. Azad however is not the only senior leader from Kashmir who has failed to rise to the occasion; even Farooq Abdullah, the other stalwart of state’s political leadership too seems to have lost his voice and has not issued even a statement let alone coming on the roads and make efforts to restore peace in the valley which has reeled under violence and curfew for over two weeks now. “While Omar is settling political scores with PDP for similar unrest in valley during 2010 when NC was in power, Farooq has not done anything towards restoration of peace” said Dheeraj, questioning their credentials as leaders. “If these main stream politicians call themselves as the true representatives of the people and term separatists as insignificant, why are they shying away from their moral responsibility at such a crucial time?” , he added. While Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed for peace in the valley and Home Minister Rajnath Singh embarked on two day visit to personally assess the situation, CM Mehbooba Mufti is seen alone visiting families of the victims of violence and making fervent appeals for peace to all and sundry, with little support from her own party. |
