Dyslipidemia, a contributing Factor for CVD: Dr. Sushil | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 7: Believing in the dictum that awareness is the first step towards change Dr. Sushil Sharma (HOD Cardiology GMCH & SSH Jammu) today held a day long camp at Panjore Marh Block in the outskirts of Jammu City. More than 150 patients were examined, evaluated and free medicines were distributed as per the requirements. Special care and attention was given to those who were weak and ailing during the camp. Inspite of heavy rain large number of people benefited by the cardiac awareness camp . While interacting with the people, Dr. Sushil said, "CVD are the major cause of morbidity and mortality in our society. In India, there has been an alarming increase in the prevalence of CVD over the past two decades so much so that accounts for 24% of all deaths among adults aged 25-69 years and dyslipidemia has been found to be the one of the important contributing factor .Abnormal levels of lipids (fats) in the blood are risk factors for cardiovascular disease. He added that lipid abnormalities in human body can be attributed to number of factors like aging, various disorder (including inherited ones), use of certain drugs or life style (such as consuming a diet high in saturated fat, being physical inactive or being overweight). Making a distinction between Good and Bad cholesterol and its possible effects on the body, Dr. Sushil elaborated that generally, a high cholesterol level (which includes LDL, HDL and VLDL cholesterol), particularly High levels of LDL (the "Bad") cholesterol lead to atherosclerosis and thus increasing the risk of heart attack and ischemic stroke. A high level of HDL (the "Good") cholesterol reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease as it carries cholesterol away from the blood stream. He further stressed that people who have HDL ? 35mg/dl were at 3 times greater risk for CAD compared with those who had HDL- cholesterol levels ? 35mg/dl. Each 1mg/dl increase in HDL cholesterol reduces CHD risk by 2% in men and 3% in women. Since HDL is a good cholesterol, higher the level better for the heart. Dr Sushil advised people to reduce intake of fat rich diet, transfatty acids and includes lot of fibre rich foods in daily routine. Do brisk walking for minimum 30-45 min at least 5 days a week as it has shown to increase HDL level, monitor your blood lipid profile in regular intervals and stay away from smoke and maintained healthy weight. |
