Kashmir based legislators 'vanish' in thin air, people suffer | | | Jehangir Rashid
Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Aug 7: All the Kashmir based legislators seemed to have gone into 'hibernation' since none among them is visible on the ground. Their absence has meant that they have failed to play their role in defusing the crisis that has engulfed Kashmir over the past one month or so. MLAs and MLCs of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), National Conference (NC) and Congress have gone on a long 'leave' and none among them is visible on the ground so as to play their part in bringing the situation under control in the valley. These people who would not waste any opportunity of going to areas during election time are missing from the scene. The absence of legislators has led to anger among the people and it is due to this reason that houses of some law makers have already being targeted during the month long agitation. Kashmir has been on boil since the evening of July 8 when Hizbul Mujahideen Commander Burhan Muzaffar Wani was killed along with his two associates in an encounter at Bemdoora-Kokernag in South Kashmir's Anantnag district. South Kashmir which has bore the brunt of the violence with 90 percent deaths taking place has been virtually left to the mercy of the Almighty. Barring a visit of chief minister Mehbooba Mufti that too under high security cover, no politician from any party has dared to visit their constituency up to this moment. It goes to the credit of Home Minister Rajnath Singh who visited Anantnag during his two day visit to the valley some two weeks back. South Kashmir considered a bastion of ruling PDP has witnessed gore and destruction during the past one month. Despite witnessing so many killings no legislator of PDP has turned up in order to apply balm on the wounds of the bruised people. Had any legislator turned up in his own area the people might have accepted the fact that the legislator belongs to them and he or she has not let them down at this crucial juncture? It would be in place to mention here that 15 days before the violence broke out chief minister emerged victorious from Anantnag constituency in the bye-polls that were held following the demise of her father and PDP Patron, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. Mehbooba won by a handsome margin of more than 12,000 votes in the election that saw more than 35 percent people taking part in the voting. While the votes were polled onJune 22 the results were declared on June 25. Same can be said of the other constituencies of South Kashmir where people turned up in great numbers during 2014 assembly elections and voted overwhelmingly. As on date the electorate of South Kashmir seems to have been 'ditched' by their elected representatives as nobody among them has come up to provide relief to them. People of South Kashmir are feeling the heat and their elected representatives are cooling off their heels either in Srinagar or Jammu. Barring the issuance of statements by legislators like Mohammad Yusuf Tarigami (MLA Kulgam), Hakeem Mohammad Yasin (MLA Khan Saheb) and Sheikh Abdul Rashid (MLA Langate) the law makers have decided to adopt 'wait and watch' policy vis-à-vis current situation. As on date the situation in the Kashmir is highly volatile with law makers being marginalized by the common masses. |
