Flood like situation in Jammu region after heavy rains | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 7: Alert has been sounded, as water level increased in River Tawi and Chenab while houses close to the banks are evacuated and Jammu-Srinagar national highway got closed as overnight rains created havoc across Jammu region. "As water level swelled in River Tawi here, the houses along the banks especially in Gujjar Nagar area are evacuated," a police official here said. He said property and household items have been shifted to the safe places while a team of SDRF has been called in to help in shifting property to safer places. "Tawi level lowered to 16 feet but it will swell again in few hours as Udhampur level crossed the danger mark," Simrandeep Singh, DC Jammu said. He said Gauge at Chenab is above alert level at 32.4 feet while so far nothing untoward like has been reported. "The rivers have eroded lands in some areas," he asserted. Meanwhile people living in low lying areas of the district suffered due to the rains as water entered in many houses in Bhagwat Nagar, Talab Tillo, Canal Road, Lajpat Nagar, Rajinder Nagar, Shiv Nagar localities. Traffic remained disrupted due to waterlogged roads and overflowing drains. The landslide hit Jammu-Srinagar national highway also got closed due to rains. "Due to landslide near Khairi in Udhampur the highway got blocked and a man also suffered injuries in the incident," a police spokesman said. He said traffic has been suspended while the vehicles are stranded at different locations on the highway |
