Balochistan has stung Congress, Left | Congress of confusion | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Aug 18: Congress is clueless. Congress is rattled. Congress doesn't know what to say and what not to say. Congress leadership has gone totally confused. How else should one describe the yes and no to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Balochistan comments in the all-party meeting on Kashmir unrest and his Independence Day speech. His comments on Balochistan and POJK and Gilgit-Baltistan have so rattled the top Congress leaders that they are opposing and supporting the Prime Minister's comments at the same time. On August 15, Congress leader and former Foreign Minister Salman Khurshid opposed the Prime Minister's comments on Balochistan and said India should not interfere in Pakistan's internal matters. The same day the AICC held press conference and clarified that what Khurshid said were his personal views and the party supported the Indian stand on Balochistan. The stand of the Congress party didn't go well with many top Congress leaders, including Salman Khurshid, P Chidam-baram and Ghulam Nabi Azad. All the three top Congress leaders again and again raked up the Balochistan issue to tell a particular constituency, including the one in Kashmir Valley, that they were unhappy with the Prime Minister's remarks and that they wanted the Prime Minister to address the political issue of Kashmir instead of talking about Balochistan and POJK and Gilgit-Baltistan. Azad, like Khurshid, was more vocal. Making a strong pitch for dialogue, he said "Prime Minister Narendra Modi should ensure that the situation in the Valley is brought under control before 'talking about other things' like Balochistan". "The Prime Minister is talking about something else when the house is on fire'. "Save the crown" (read Kashmir) of the country by talking to the local people. Our Prime Minister is international. (While visiting foreign countries) he should also pay attention to what is happening here. He should focus on where the situation is bad," he also said. Interestingly, there are still Congress leaders who are opposing and supporting Prime Minister Narendra Modi for what he said about Balochistan, POJK and Gilgit-Baltistan, this suggesting that confusion of sorts has gripped the Congress leadership. This is not good for the health of the party, which claims that it is the oldest political organization in the country and that it stands for the unity and integrity of the country. This confusion at a time when the whole of the nation has appreciated shift in New Delhi's foreign policy towards Pakistan and policy towards J&K has further added to its unpopularity. |
