False claim: NC is not even Kashmir-level party 8/22/2016 10:48:52 PM Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 22: Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly and former J&K CM Omar Abdullah has been creating an impression in Delhi that his party was a state-level party and that the delegation he led to the Union Capital was representative in character. His claim appears to be untenable. There was a time when the NC was the only political party in Kashmir that used to play all shot, good or bad. There was hardly anyone who could take on the NC. As for its presence in Jammu and Ladakh, it was only marginal. Even now, the NC has only little support base in Jammu province and virtually zero support base in Ladakh. It may have a few pockets here and there and the PDP, which is also Kashmir based, is doing its best to even snatch those pockets. The NC remained a dominant force till 1996, when it swept the polls and won two-third majority in the assembly. That was the last time the NC scored an impressive victory and it could happen because of the peculiar political situation then and the bumglings of the Congress party. It never recovered there after. In 2002, the NC under the leadership of Omar Abdullah won 28 seats, the poorest ever performance in its long political inning. It couldn't improve its position in 2008; it could only repeat its 2002 performance by wining 28 seats. However, in 2014, the people of Kashmir rejected the NC outright. The NC could win only 15 seats, which also included three-odd seats in Jammu. The 2014 verdict established beyond doubt that the NC had lost its sheen and appeal and become a marginal outfit. To be more precise, the 2014 verdict established that NC was not even a Kashmir-level party; it established that it was a sub-regional party with some support base in the urban Kashmir. It was the PDP that rendered the NC weak. All this should debunk the claim of the Omar Abdullah that his was a state level party.
