Vijay Kapoor likely to be next JK Governor | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 22: Lt General Ata Hasnain is unlikely to be made the next Governor of the state. Former bureaucrat Vijay Kapoor is the likely choice. Ata Hasnain has been ruled out as the next Governor of the state for host of factors according to the sources in the home ministry. There are many factors which go against him as the new incumbent. Sources said that first of all Hasnain is a Muslim and in a Muslim majority state where chief minister always comes from the majority community having a Governor from the same community would go against the principle of checks and balances. Another important factor is that Governor is the chairman of both the Mata Vaishno Devi and also Amarnath Shrine Board. And as per the constitution of these boards the chairman, who is the Governor, has to be Hindu also. So by having Muslim as a Governor, the entire constitution has to be changed and this the no government would like to do given the religious sensibilities. "Who would dare to change the constitution of these boards, which have done commendable job in the past. And if do then voices will be raised that by the same logic the constitution of the Waqaf board be also changed to make opening for the hindu, which could be very difficult thing," said an official According the sources in J&K, Hindus constitute about 38 perent of the population and if this community can't have CM from them then even not having a Governor from them will send a very disturbing and negative signal. "J&K is unlike another state, here both the communities are very assertive and very sensistive. So who will like to prick their sensivity, so we wouldn't go ahead with him," said the official. Hasnain is very close to the son of the Ajit Doval, who runs a think tank. He has been very articulate with regard to the Kashmir and could have been considered but being from the majority community of the state goes against him. |
