Fate of Ahata Amar Singh linked to Kashmir unrest | Estates deptt in hurry to demolish it | | Akshay Azad Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 22: Apart from paralyzing the valley, the Kashmir turmoil has also hindered the process of declaring the Ahata Amar Singh as a heritage building under J&K Heritage Conservation and Preservation Act of 2010 but Estates department is reportedly in a hurry to demolish it but their attempts have been put on hold by stay order of a court. Deputy Director of Archives, Archeology and Museums department, Mohamamd Arshad Peerzada informed Early Times that the building Ahata Amar Singh has already been enlisted by department under Heritage building category under J&K Heritage Conservation and Preservation Act of 2010 and the letter was forwarded to Director in the month of June. "The building fulfills the parameters required for declaring any building a Heritage monument. It is more than 100 years old, its antique architecture besides its importance in context of historical context as it was being used by Dogra rulers as stable for hourses and Palkighar for Royal queens", he said, adding that though the file was forwarded to Director office, but due to turmoil in valley, they were unaware about the further developments. He further said, "If there will be normalcy in valley, the site would have been declared as heritage building." On being asked about Estate department's proposal to demolish it, he said, "The Estates department had sought clarification from us and we had informed them that the process of declaring it as historical monument had already been initiated", he said, adding that if the department has any plan to demolish it, they must had approached them for No Objection Certificate (NOC) but no such permission was granted by them to Estates department. He further said that the issue pertained to government, which must take some decision. "I have already intimated to the Director and the Estates department must consider the issue and should not dismantle this historically important site in a hurry", he said. Deputy Director of Estates department Satish Sharma said that same plea of historically importance was given by applicants in the court and had secured a stay, which was later vacated by court after response was filed by department. "Today again the residents have secured a stay and we will obey the orders of court", he said, adding that they would further pursue the case according to established procedure. |
